Chinchillas are adorable, fluffy creatures that make wonderful pets. Adult chinchillas typically weigh between 1.5 and 3.5 pounds.

To determine your chinchilla's weight, you'll need a scale that can accurately measure small animals. The ideal scale for chinchillas is a digital scale with a high level of precision, as they can be quite light.

You should weigh your chinchilla regularly to monitor their health and detect any potential issues. A healthy chinchilla will generally maintain a consistent weight over time.

It's essential to use a scale that is specifically designed for small animals, as these scales are more accurate and gentle on your chinchilla's sensitive paws.

Chinchilla Weight Basics

Chinchillas come in a range of weights, with the average young adult chinchilla weighing around 650g.

The weight of a chinchilla can vary depending on its sex, subspecies, age, and genetically-determined size. A chinchilla's genes largely determine whether it is smaller or larger than usual, so there's lots of variation.

A good quality adult chinchilla should be over 650g and have clear, dense fur. It's desirable to "look like a brick" from the top down with a blocky shape and clarity in color and density.

Locally in Singapore, quality adult chinchillas weighing over 650g are hard to come by. Many years back, the author hunted around the island for a long time, visiting many hobby breeders in the process.

Chinchillas that are too skinny can be a concern. Anything more than 550g/19.5 oz is a healthy weight, but some owners say 450g+ is okay.

Weighing Your Chinchilla

Weighing your chinchilla is a simple process that requires just a kitchen scale and some basic knowledge.

To start, you'll want to use a flat surface to place the scale on. This will ensure accurate readings.

Place the bowl that comes with the scale on it, or use a regular bowl instead. This is where your chinchilla will be placed.

If your scale has a function to reset the readout to zero, use it to cancel out the weight of the bowl. This will give you a more accurate measurement.

If your scale doesn't have this function, weigh the bowl on its own and make a note of the weight. Then, put your chinchilla on the scale inside the bowl and take the first measurement away from the second one.

Using a scale that shows weight in grams is ideal, as grams are a more accurate unit of measurement than ounces. This will also make it easier to compare your chinchilla's weight to others.

You can use any kitchen scale, but ideally, you should choose one that shows weight in grams.
