The atypical introductory notes are similar to certain song phrases of the Song Sparrow, which shares habitat with White-throated Sparrows at our study site. However, correlations with the Song Sparrow song in Raven were low.

Male White-throated Sparrows display four distinct different singing patterns: descending, ascending, ascending and then descending, and monotone. The frequency of songs is distinct between individuals and thus may serve as a signal of individual identity.
