Ragdoll cats come in a stunning array of colors and patterns, making each one unique and special.
The most common Ragdoll colors are solid, pointed, and mink, which are the result of the interaction between the cat's genetics and the production of melanin.
From these three main colors, you can get a wide range of variations, including seal, blue, chocolate, lilac, and red.
These colors can also come in different shades and intensities, creating a beautiful spectrum of hues.
Types of Ragdoll Cat Colors
Blue Colorpoint Ragdolls are blue (gray) pointed cats without any white, and they're the second most common color and pattern combination in the breed.
The most common color and pattern combination is actually Seal Point, but we don't have any photos of them because the breeders haven't produced just a Seal Point to-date.
Flame Ragdolls, also called Red Ragdolls, are the orange cat of the breed, with shades ranging from bright apricot to deep red.

Their coloring can be brightest on their points, such as their ears, face, paws, and tail, and their body may range in shades of ivory to bright white.
The majority of Flame Ragdolls are males, and they can have little freckles on their nose, lips, eyelids, and ears.
Flame Ragdolls can be seen in a variety of patterns, but they will almost always present with some form of tabby stripe due to the unique way that orange pigment is dispersed through the hair shaft.

The color of a Ragdoll cat can change with age, and it's not uncommon for full-grown Ragdolls to be slightly lighter in summer than in winter. This is because the point gene reacts to the surrounding warmth, causing the cat's color to deepen with age.
Here's a list of the main Ragdoll cat colors:
- Blue Ragdoll
- Chocolate Ragdoll
- Cream Point Ragdolls
- Lilac Ragdoll
- Red Ragdoll or Flame Ragdolls

Tortie
Tortie is not a color, but rather an overlay or variation that involves the mottling of red or cream throughout a Ragdoll's coat.
This unique pattern can be seen in many Ragdolls, including Blue Tortie Point Mitted Ragdolls, like Cirilla, and Seal Tortie Point Bicolor Ragdolls, like Wolke.
Tortie Ragdolls can have a beautiful combination of colors, such as blue and cream, or seal and cream.
Their coats can also feature a lovely blend of dark and light shades, making each one truly unique.
The term "Tabby Point" is often used interchangeably with "Lynx", which is a type of Ragdoll coat pattern that features white eyeliner and face stripes.
This pattern can be seen in Ragdolls like the Seal Point Lynx Ragdolls, which are uncommon but absolutely striking.

Colorpoint Ragdolls have colored chins and colored front paws, with well-defined color on the ears, mask, feet, and tail. Their nose leather and paw pads are fully pigmented and matching point color.

Patterns

Ragdolls come in various patterns, including bicolor, mitted, and colorpoint.
The bicolor pattern features white, inverted "V"s on the face, with pink noses, and white markings on the ears, legs, and paws.
Symmetry is preferred for the bicolor pattern, and any excessive asymmetry or dark spotting can lead to penalties.
White markings on the ears can also result in penalties.
The mitted pattern is similar to the colorpoint pattern but has white chins and mittens on the front paws.
Colorpoint Ragdolls have colored chins and front paws.
The colorpoint pattern requires well-defined color on the ears, mask, feet, and tail, with fully pigmented nose leather and paw pads matching the point color.
There should be a definite contrast between the body and points, with the chest, bib, and chin areas possibly being lighter in color.
Tortie Ragdolls are a rare combination of a blue-cream tortie bicolor with the striping overlay, and almost all tortie Ragdolls are females.
The Mitted Pattern
The Mitted Pattern is one of the most recognizable and beloved Ragdoll patterns. Mitted Ragdolls display points in well-defined colors on the legs, ears, mask, and tail.
Their face features a variety of markings, including a white blaze that can take the shape of a star, diamond, hourglass, or line. The nose leather is fully pigmented and must match the color of the points.
A distinctive feature of Mitted Ragdolls is their white chin, which must extend into a white stripe on the belly. The front feet display white mittens, which must be evenly matched and ideally go up to the wrist joint.
On the hind legs, the white must go up to and around the hocks entirely and extend no higher than mid-thigh. The paw pads are pink, but may display minor spotting of color that corresponds to the color of the points.
Mitted Ragdolls can come in a variety of colors, including seal and blue. Chocolate Point Mitted Ragdolls are a lighter, warmer brown than seal, while Blue Mitted Ragdolls are a beautiful, cool blue.
Identifying Ragdoll Cat Colors
Ragdolls are split into two main categories: Ragdolls and Cherubim Ragdolls. Cherubim Ragdolls are born with their colors present, making it easier to identify their color.
Ragdolls, on the other hand, are born white and develop their color over time, often becoming evident between 2 to 12 weeks of age. In some cases, it may take several months to determine a Ragdoll's color.
Identifying the color of a Ragdoll can be a fun and exciting process, especially for new owners. You can use genetic trait tests like Basepaws or Wisdom Panel to help determine your Ragdoll's color at home.
Here are the main color categories for Ragdolls:
- Seal Ragdolls
- Blue Ragdolls
- Chocolate Ragdolls
- Lilac Ragdolls
- Flame / Red Ragdolls
- Cream Ragdolls
- Cinnamon Ragdolls
- Fawn Ragdolls
- Tortie / Torbie Ragdolls
- Blue Eyed White (BEW) Ragdolls
Some Ragdolls may require a genetic trait test to determine their color, especially if their coat is lightened by lynx stripes or if their color is slow to develop.
