The Eternal Larva

The Lake Pátzcuaro Salamanders look like larvae their entire lives, but they can grow quite big, up to 35 centimeters.

These salamanders have two striking larval attributes: the strong, flat tail and the large outer gills.

Back in 1987, fishermen were still able to catch six tons of the salamanders in Lake Pátzcuaro, highlighting the species' once-abundant population.

Evolution

The Ambystoma genus diverged following the uplifting of the Trans-Mexican Volcanic Belt. This event caused the Mexican Plateau to split from the Sierra Madre, isolating the ancestral species.

Species along the Mexican Plateau split into 3 distinct lineages based upon the plateau's drainage patterns. The Lerma River's drainage system was disrupted by volcanic activity.

Lake Patzcuaro and Lake Texcoco were separated, and the ancestral species of Ambystoma dumerilii and axolotls were isolated into their respective environments.

Michoacan University and Others

Michoacan University's Laboratory of Aquatic Biology in Morelia City, Mexico maintains a colony of Ambystoma dumerilii, also known as the lake Patzcuaro salamander. This colony is made up of 10 breeding adults as of 2021.

The university's colony focuses on captive management, genetics, reproduction, and environmental education. Michoacan University also engages in outreach programs to increase awareness for the species.

These outreach programs include murals, radio broadcasts, and touring exhibitions to educate the public about the importance of conservation. The university partners with other organizations to promote the species.

Habitat loss has severely decreased the achoque population in Pátzcuaro, a city located on Lake Pátzcuaro, over the past decades.

The rising human population has led to habitat destruction and pollution, making it difficult for the salamanders to find a suitable habitat.

Lake Pátzcuaro is a vital source of water, but its quality has been negatively impacted by silt, fertilizer, sewage, cow waste, and pollutant runoff.

Between 1982 and 2010, the lake lost a quarter of its total volume, and water temperatures have significantly increased, further limiting the salamander's habitat.

Efforts to rehabilitate the environment throughout the 1990s and 2000s were unsuccessful, highlighting the urgent need for conservation.

The salamanders have trouble finding a suitable habitat due to the heavy pollution of Lake Pátzcuaro, making it challenging for them to survive.

In fact, the lake's depth has decreased by an estimated 2.6 m (8.5 ft) due to siltation, further reducing the salamander's habitat.
