Building a DIY water fountain for your furry friend is a fun and rewarding project that can provide them with a refreshing and healthy drinking experience. According to our previous section, dogs can drink up to 1 gallon of water per day, so it's essential to have a reliable and clean water source.

The first step is to choose a suitable location for your fountain. As we discussed, it's best to place the fountain in a quiet and shaded area to minimize noise and prevent evaporation.

You'll need a few basic materials, including a plastic container, a submersible pump, and a water filter. A 5-gallon bucket is a great option for the container, as it's easy to clean and provides enough space for the pump and filter.

To ensure your fountain is safe and functional, make sure to assemble it correctly, following the manufacturer's instructions for the pump and filter.

Materials

To make a DIY water fountain for dogs, you'll need the right materials. I've found that a Tetra Whisper Internal Filter or Tetra ReptoFilter works well for this project.

For the bowl, a 10 inch bowl is a good size to use. It's not the same one I used, but it will work just as well.

You'll also need a 4 inch pet dish, which can be a bit different from the one I have.

Pebbles or rocks can be used to line the fountain, or you can opt for the Expanded Clay Pebbles I saw in a video I watched. I'll be getting those later on.

Here's a list of the materials you'll need:

  • Tetra Whisper Internal Filter or Tetra ReptoFilter
  • 10 Inch Bowl
  • 4 inch pet dish
  • Pebbles/Rocks or Expanded Clay Pebbles

Instructions

To build a DIY water fountain for your dog, you'll need to start by placing the filter pump inside a 10 inch bowl, towards the back. This will help keep the pump stable and prevent it from getting in the way of the water flow.

Add a few pebbles of your choice to cover the bottom and around the pump. This will help keep the pump clean and prevent any debris from getting stuck.

You can start adding in a few pet-safe plants (with roots) and fill the bowl with pebbles around them to hold them in place. Just be sure to choose plants that are safe for your dog to be around.

To complete the fountain, place a 4 inch bowl on top in front of the pump. Make sure it's not touching the larger bowl, as this can cause water to spill out.

To get the fountain up and running, start adding water little by little, and then plug in the pump. Keep adding water until the water starts flowing freely.

Attach the Velcro

Attach the velcro to create a secure and adjustable water fountain setup.

Use the 2L bottle to measure where to put the soft velcro. This will help you get the perfect spot for the water level.

The mouth of the bottle should stick down into the bowl at the height you want the water to fill up to. This ensures a smooth and consistent water flow.

Stick the 2 soft pieces of velcro on the 2×4, following the picture for reference. Make sure they're securely attached.

Once the soft velcro is in place, stick the hard velcro to the soft velcro. This creates a strong and adjustable attachment point.

Put the 2L bottle on the sticky side of the velcro, and you're done! This completes the water fountain setup.
