Derrick Fisher is a 38-year-old American professional basketball coach and former player. He is the current head coach of the New York Knicks of the National Basketball Association (NBA). Fisher played 18 seasons in the NBA, winning five championships with the Los Angeles Lakers. He was born in Little Rock, Arkansas.
Fisher was raised by his mother, Frances, and stepfather, Elwyn. He has an older sister, Tonya, and a younger sister, Shameka. His father, Howard, was not a part of his life. Fisher attended Parkview Arts and Science Magnet High School in Little Rock, where he played basketball for head coach Darwin Thomas. As a senior in 1995–96, he averaged 19.4 points, 6.4 rebounds, 5.1 assists and 3.5 steals per game, leading his team to the state championship. He was named the Arkansas Democrat-Gazette All-Arkansas Preps Player of the Year, the ASWA All-State Player of the Year and a USA Today All-USA Second Team honoree.
Fisher accepted a scholarship to play college basketball at the University of Arkansas. He chose the Razorbacks over offers from Iowa State, Kansas State and Holly Warlick's University of Tennessee. As a freshman in 1996–97, he started all 32 games for the Razorbacks and averaged 10.1 points, 2.4 rebounds, 2.6 assists and 1.4 steals per game. He was named to the SEC All-Freshman Team. In the summer of 1997, Fisher played for the United States at the FIBA Under-19 World Championship, which was held in Greece. He averaged 5.9 points, 2.2 rebounds and 2.6 assists in nine games.
As a sophomore in 1997–98, Fisher averaged 12.3 points, 2.8 rebounds, 4.0 assists and 1.6 steals per game. He was named a second-team All-SEC selection by the AP. In the summer of 1998, he played for the United States at the Goodwill Games in New York City. He averaged 9.3 points, 3.0 rebounds and 3.3 assists in eight games.
