These fish are quite fascinating, and their name comes from the Greek words "psalis", meaning "scissors", and "odon", meaning "teeth." This refers to the shape of their teeth.
Psalidodon was revived from its synonymy with Astyanax in 2020, along with some members of the genus Hyphessobrycon.
