The recall of Dreambone dog treats has left many pet owners concerned about their furry friends' safety. In July 2022, the treats were recalled due to potential choking hazards.

Dreambone dog treats were manufactured by Milk-Bone's parent company, J.M. Smucker Co., and were sold nationwide in the US. The recall affected specific lots of the treats.

If you're unsure whether your dog's treats are affected, check the packaging for the lot numbers listed in the recall notice.

Potential Risks and Consequences

DreamBone dog treats have been linked to illness, vomiting, and even death in dogs. The FDA has received 68 reports of dogs harmed by these treats, with 15 fatalities.

Some dogs may struggle to digest rawhide alternatives like DreamBone, leading to indigestion or stomach pain. Others may chew off large pieces and risk blocking their esophagus.

Reports of sickness in dogs have been submitted to SafelyHQ, a consumer watchdog site, with over 70 complaints about DreamBone in 2022 alone. This is almost twice as many as in 2021.

The FDA has defined bone treats as "real bones that have been processed, sometimes flavored, and packaged for dogs." These treats have been linked to blockage in digestive tracts, choking, cuts and wounds in the mouth and tonsils, vomiting, diarrhea, and bleeding from the rectum.

Sorbitol, an indigestible sugar alcohol, was found in DreamBone chewable treats in a 2016 lawsuit. This substance can cause gastrointestinal issues if ingested in large quantities.

In 2022, a Texas resident's Pekingese, Boogie, died after consuming a DreamBone treat. Boogie began vomiting and having bloody diarrhea before passing away 24 hours later.

The FDA recommends against feeding your dog chicken bones or other bones from the kitchen table, as these can cause serious injuries.

Consumer Action

Consumers who purchased the affected Dream Bone products are urged to dispose of them immediately.

To be eligible for a refund, your product's lot code must start with AH, AV, A, AI, AO, or AB, and have an expiration date between 06/01/2019 and 05/31/2020.

Make sure to check the back of the package for this information, as it's crucial for getting a refund.

The recall is limited to dog chew products that contain rawhide, so if you have any other type of Dream Bone product, you're not affected.
