The Decker Rat Terrier is a unique and fascinating breed. They are a type of Rat Terrier that originated from the United States.

Decker Rat Terriers are generally small in size, weighing between 10-25 pounds and standing about 10-18 inches tall. They have a short, smooth coat that requires minimal grooming.

These puppies are known for their intelligence, energy, and affectionate nature. They are often described as " Velcro dogs" because of their tendency to stick close to their owners.

Decker Rat Terriers are relatively low-maintenance pets, requiring daily exercise but not a lot of space to run around. They are adaptable to living in apartments or homes with small yards.

Choosing a Decker Rat Terrier

Choosing a Decker Rat Terrier is a crucial step in bringing home the perfect companion. A reputable and ethical breeder is a must, so be sure to ask for references, health clearances, and genetic testing results for both parents.

You'll want to find a breeder who can help you find the right Decker Rat Terrier for your family, not just any dog that fits your budget. Take your time and don't settle for a dog that doesn't fit your lifestyle or personality.

A Decker Rat Terrier is bred as a companion dog, with lower energy levels and less of a prey drive than a Rat Terrier. This makes them a great choice for families with less active lifestyles.

Decker Rat Terriers are not for everyone, especially if you're looking for a high-energy dog that can keep up with your active lifestyle.

Preparing for a Puppy

Before you bring a Decker Rat Terrier puppy home, you need to consider their high energy level. They require a lot of exercise, so if you live in an apartment or don't have much space for your dog to run around, you might want to think twice.

Decker Rat Terriers are known to be escape artists, so you'll need to make sure your yard is securely fenced. If you're not prepared to deal with the possibility of your dog getting out, this breed might not be for you.

These dogs are barking machines, bred to alert their owners to potential prey. If you have close neighbors or live in an apartment building, you might want to consider a quieter breed.

Decker Rat Terriers are intelligent and can be headstrong, so they need a confident owner who knows how to handle them. If you're not prepared for a dog that requires a lot of exercise and training, then the Decker Rat Terrier may not be the right breed for you.

As a loyal breed, Decker Rat Terriers make excellent watchdogs and are very good with children. If you're looking for a dog who is active and good with kids, the Decker Rat Terrier may be the perfect breed.

Finding a Breeder

Ask your friends and family if they know any reputable Decker rat terrier breeders. They can vouch for the breeder's good reputation if they've had a positive experience with them.

Doing your research is also crucial. Read reviews and compare different breeders to find one who is knowledgeable about the breed and responsible with their animals.

Word-of-mouth is a great way to start your search, but don't rely solely on it. Visit the breeder in person to see the facilities where the dogs are kept and meet the puppy's parents.

This will give you a chance to ask questions and get a feel for the breeder's ethics and practices. By following these steps, you'll be well on your way to finding a reputable Decker rat terrier breeder.

Current Litters

I'm excited to share with you the current litters of Decker Rat Terrier puppies. The spring litter of 2014 was a promising one, with Em, the dam, expecting a moderate-sized litter.

Em is 16″ at the shoulder and weighs around 25 lbs. Hercules, the sire, is about the same size at around 1 1/2 years old.

The potential for these pups to mature to 18″ or more is there, given Em's past experience with larger offspring from a smaller male.

These pups should have good temperaments, solid builds with good bone, and good hunting ability. Tails have been docked, but the dewclaws remain on.

I'm looking forward to seeing how these pups mature over the next two months and how they may differ from my previous litters.
