Coat Colour and Genetics

The Cavalier King Charles Spaniel's coat is a stunning feature that comes in four recognized color patterns: Blenheim, Tricolor, Black and Tan, and Ruby. These colors are the result of a combination of genes that determine the base color and any additional markings.

The base color for most Cavaliers is black and tan, which is determined by the A or agouti gene. This gene sets the base color in dogs, cats, horses, and other animals. The rare recessive variant of this gene, which we'll return to later, is a variant that affects the base color.

The Cavalier coat color variations are all drawn from other genes, but one gene that's always present in Cavaliers is the G gene, which codes for grey. However, this gene is always G in Cavaliers, so we don't need to worry about it. The same is true for the D gene, which codes for dark coat color diluted to blue in Great Danes.

In fact, all Cavaliers are mm, which means they're non-carriers of the dominant merle gene. This is why a merle-carrying dog should never be bred to another merle-carrying dog. The genetic makeup of some Cavaliers can be known from their color alone or their parentage, but many can only be ascertained through sustained breeding, and even then, not always with complete confidence.

If you're trying to determine whether your tricolor Cavalier is a dominant tricolor, you can try mating it with a Blenheim. If the result is a string of tricolours with no Blenheims, then yes, you probably have a dominant tricolor. However, there's still a 1% element of doubt, and the only way to get proof is through a DNA test for color inheritance.

Here are the four recognized color patterns of the Cavalier King Charles Spaniel:

  • Blenheim: Rich chestnut markings on a pearly white background.
  • Tricolor: Black and white coat with tan markings on the cheeks, inside ears, on eyebrows, inside legs, and on the underside of the tail.
  • Black and Tan: Black body with tan highlights, particularly on the eyebrows, cheeks, legs, and beneath the tail.
  • Ruby: Entirely chestnut coat, presenting a solid and rich reddish-brown color.

These colors are a result of the complex trait of coat color, which is influenced by multiple genes working together.

Grooming and Care

Their silky coat requires regular grooming to prevent matting and tangling. Weekly brushing is a must to maintain the coat's condition and reduce shedding.

Regular ear cleaning is essential, as their floppy ears can be prone to infections. This is a common issue with this breed, so it's crucial to stay on top of it.

Routine dental care is vital to their overall health and well-being. Regular nail trimming is also necessary to prevent overgrowth, which can be painful and lead to other problems.

By following a consistent grooming regimen, you can help keep your Cavalier King Charles Spaniel happy and healthy.
